Robyn’s personal priority and commitment to protecting children; House Bill 2962:
In 2022 Robyn Holtz proposed the need for a state law that makes it unlawful for anyone to be within 100 feet of school property unless they have a lawful purpose to be there.
Our local State Representative’s, Jared Patterson and Kronda Thimesch, supported it and Kronda filed it as House Bill 2962 during the 2023 State Legislative session. Unfortunately, time ran out before it could be heard on the house floor.
This year State Representative Jared Patterson and others plan to file it again for the 2025 State Legislative Session and will make an even stronger push to ensure it is heard and given the chance to pass.
It is a huge priority to Robyn Holtz that all children are safe when at school and that we are not giving anyone with harmful intentions the opportunity to access or observe our children at an unsafe distance.
Robyn personally had an issue at her children’s daycare a few years ago where an individual would sit outside the playground frequently while children were out there. Staff and parents would ask this person to relocate to another area not as close to the children and the person would not. The local authorities were notified numerous times, but each time would say as long as someone is not ON school property, then they are not breaking any laws and there is nothing the authorities can do. This brought on a great concern for Robyn, because by the time someone steps on school property it will be too late.
If teachers, staff or parents had the opportunity to see someone suspicious scoping out a school or children and be able to notify local authorities, think of how many incidents could be prevented?
As of today, if someone sees an individual loitering around a school without reason to do so, there is nothing anyone can do until a crime has been committed. These are our children who depend on us to protect them. Why do we want to wait until something awful has happened to remove someone from the area.
After conducting extensive research Robyn was able to find at least seven other states who already have a similar law in place to protect their kids. Texas should be doing the same!
Help Robyn make sure all of our children are protected.
This is a personal priority for Robyn and not one related to her duties on City Council, but would appreciate any support.
